From Vermeer to Van Gogh: A History of Dutch Art

10 week course: 29 January - 8 April 2016

This course will introduce students to the rich artistic heritage of the Netherlands, from medieval art to Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl movement. We will concentrate in particular on the art of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Vermeer, Steen and others active in the Dutch Republic during the so-called Golden Age. There will be lectures on the Utrecht Caravaggisti painters such as Gerrit van Honthorst who were much influenced by Caravaggio’s rich chiaroscuro and diverse subject matter, as well “Painting in Focus” talks on particular works such as The Night Watch by Rembrandt. We will also be looking at Dutch music with a special guest talk by the highly popular lecturer and performer Peter Medhurst. Peter’s lecture-recital entitled “The musical pictures of Vermeer” explores the artist’s musical scenes against the backdrop of 17th century Dutch history and performs a selection of period songs and keyboard music to complement the pictures.

The course is structured thematically, and images are discussed within their economic, political and social context.

Art History in Focus’s courses are characterised by a relaxed and entertaining learning environment, which often allows for lively discussion. Lectures last two hours with a break for refreshments, and the talks are illustrated by high quality digital images. The course includes a study day at the National Gallery

Lectures are on Friday mornings and run from 11-1; doors open at 10.45.

Please note, February 12th will be afternoon session from 2.30-4.30. There is no class on 11 March
