Painting in Focus: Mme X

Monday 21st September 6pm

John Singer Sargent’s portrait of the notorious and beautiful socialite Madame Pierre Gautreau is now considered to be one of the most elegant and exquisite portraits of the late 19th century, yet when it was unveiled it provoked an unprecedented scandal, leading to humiliation for its sitter and its creator. Why has public opinion changed so greatly? Why was it considered so controversial and why was it given the rather enigmatic title, Madame X? We trace the history of this masterpiece within the context of Sargent’s oeuvre and reveal how it transformed the reputation of both model and artist.
This is a live-streamed lecture which will be given by Siân Walters at 6.00pm BST (British Summer Time).  Tune in from anywhere in the world to watch or enjoy a recorded version of the lecture which can be accessed for up to 24 hours afterwards. The lecture will last one hour and will be followed by questions which Siân will answer live.
