Treasures of Art and Architecture in Vienna

Wednesday 16th to Friday 18th September 11am-1pm

In this three-day course we explore the rich tradition of art and architecture in Vienna from the medieval period until the early 20th century.

The course comprises three live-streamed lectures which will be given at 11.00am BST (British Summer Time). Tune in from anywhere in the world to watch or enjoy a recorded version which can be accessed for up to 24 hours afterwards. Each session will last approximately 2 hours with a short break and a question/answer session. Students will be provided with comprehensive hand-outs and a suggested reading list/online resources before the course begins - these will be sent by email.

Participant numbers for 3-day courses will be limited to allow for extended discussion. Those wishing to use the microphone/webcam function can appear in the lecture to ask their questions. There will also be a virtual "coffee break" where those wishing to use this function can chat informally and see one another. The participation fee is £60 per person

After a historical introduction we spend time discovering jewels of the city's great art collections from the Kunsthistorisches Museum to the Belvedere. We will learn about works by van Eyck, Rubens, Vermeer and Rembrandt to exponents of Jugendstil (the German/Austrian variant of Art Nouveau) and Expressionism such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.

We then explore the history of Viennese Architecture from the Baroque to Biedermeier period and discover how the city found expression in a magnificent flourishing of the visual arts during the fin-de-siècle. We will also discuss the close relationship between Viennese art and music during this period.

We end with a survey of Viennese portraiture, with discussion of well-known masters such as Friedrich von Amerling, Waldmüller and Klimt to female artists such as Teresa Ries and Broncia Koller, little-known today but highly successful and much admired during their lifetime.
