Cultural Travels from Home: A Latin American Musical Journey

Thursday 26th November, 6.00pm

In our new mini-series of online webinars during November and December, we visit artists and guides in various cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, virtual visit or demonstration. The events are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions and to travel virtually from the comfort of your home, no matter your location. Your participation will also support artists and guides working in the cultural sector whose activities have been affected by the current pandemic.

This week we are delighted to welcome the internationally renowned classical guitarist Morgan Szymanski who will be joining us live from Mexico. Morgan has established himself as one of the finest performers of his generation and can regularly be heard at major UK venues including Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and Queen Elizabeth Hall. Tonight Morgan will explore the history of the Latin American repertoire for the classical guitar, illustrating his informal discussion with extracts from works by Piazzolla, Ponce, Villa-Lobos and Leo Brouwer amongst others.

After the interview we will look forward to hearing your questions - plenty of time will be allowed to answer as many as possible.

This is a live webinar at 6.00pm GMT and will last one hour.  Tune in from anywhere in the world to participate or enjoy a recorded version if you cannot watch live. A link to the recording will be sent soon after the end of the session, enabling you to watch on catch up later that evening or the following day.

Booking closes the day before the event is streamed. Please refer to the Further Information panel below.

Morgan will play:

  • Scherzino Mexicano - Ponce (Mexico)
  • El Marabino - Lauro (Venezuela)
  • Danza del Altiplano - Brouwer (based on a Bolivian/Chilean theme)
  • Una Limosna por el Amor de Dios - Barrios (Paraguay)
  • Preludio - Villa Lobos (Brazil)
  • Verano Porteño - Piazzolla (Argentina)
