In Conversation: The Night Watch

Monday 1st February 6.00pm

Join National Gallery lecturer Siân Walters and interviewer Peter Cassidy in a live, interactive discussion as we explore Rembrandt's Night Watch, one of the most popular portraits in the history of art and a masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age.

What seems to a straightforward painting is actually something of an enigma. It is now one of the most famous paintings in the world, instantly recognizable, and yet we do not know the identities of all the figures. Who for example are the two little girls in the centre and why does one of them have a dead chicken hanging from her dress? Does the painting really depict a night scene? What hidden symbols does it contain? Can we find Rembrandt;s own self-portrait in the painting? Why does it represent a turning point in the artist's career? Together we will answer these questions and examine the history of this intriguing and ever-popular masterpiece in the Rijksmuseum.

The interview will use Zoom Meetings (rather than Webinars) allowing you to participate and ask questions throughout this informal discussion using webcams and microphones if you wish.

Bookings close the day before the event is streamed.
