Cultural Travels from Home: A Walking Tour of Lisbon

Thursday 4th February 11.00AM

In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in various cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions.

These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries which are either currently closed or difficult to visit whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from the comfort of your home, no matter your location. Our visits will also support both galleries and individuals working in the cultural sector whose activities have been affected by the current pandemic.

Today we enjoy a live, virtual walking tour of the beautiful Belém district of Lisbon. Our expert local guide will begin our tour in front of the ornate Jerónimos Monastery, a magnificent example of Manueline architecture.  Built by the king of Portugal Manuel I, it was populated by monks of the order of St Jerome who would pray for his soul and provide spiritual guidance and assistance to sailors. Indeed Vasco da Gama and his men spent the night in prayer here before departing on their famous expedition to the Orient in 1497.  We will also see the exterior of the Monument to the Discoveries and the famous bakery which produces the delicious traditional Pastéis de Belém cakes, following an ancient recipe once made by the monks.

Our guided tour lasts one hour including interactive Q and A. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience. You will feel as though you are exploring the city yourself with the running commentary given by our guide.

This is a live event starting at 11.00am GMT and will last one hour.  Tune in from anywhere in the world to participate or enjoy a recorded version if you cannot watch live. A link to the recording will be sent soon after the end of the session, enabling you to watch on catch up later that evening or the following day.

Booking closes the day before the event is streamed. Please refer to the Further Information panel below.
