Cultural Travels from Home: The Basilica of St Francis in Assisi

Thursday 4th March 10.30AM

In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in various cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions.

These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries which are either currently closed or difficult to visit whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from the comfort of your home, no matter your location. Our visits will also support both galleries and individuals working in the cultural sector whose activities have been affected by the current pandemic.

Today we are delighted to take you on an exclusive, specially arranged virtual visit of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. After St Francis’s death in 1226 his home town suddenly became a great focus of attention.  The construction of a basilica dedicated to him (his canonisation took place in 1228) was a huge and costly affair and no expense was spared in its decoration, whereby many artists were employed from all over Italy. Or guided tour will focus on the paintings in the upper basilica including masterpieces by Cimabue as well as the world-famous series of frescoes dedicated to the life of St Francis, traditionally attributed to Giotto. The live guided tour will be led by expert local guide and historian Claire.

The price includes a (virtual) ticket entrance fee and donation to the Basilica.

Our guided tour lasts one hour including interactive Q and A. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience. You will feel as though you are exploring the basilica yourself with the running commentary given by our guide.

This is a live event starting at 10.30am GMT and will last one hour.  Tune in from anywhere in the world to participate or enjoy a recorded version if you cannot watch live. A link to the recording will be sent soon after the end of the session, enabling you to watch on catch up later that evening or the following day.

Booking closes the day before the event is streamed. Please refer to the Further Information panel below.

We are most grateful to Fra Carlo of the Basilica of St Francis for giving us permission to run this virtual tour.

Please note that it is not possible to film in the Lower Basilica due to poor internet connection.
