What Makes a Masterpiece?
10 week course: 20 January - 23 March 2012
The Mona Lisa is perhaps the single most famous artwork of all time, the most instantly recognisable portrait in European art and one of the most reproduced images in the world. But why? What is it about this tiny painting, visited by millions each year and protected by ropes and bulletproof glass, that makes her so iconic? Why have the features of a woman who was neither particularly important, nor some might argue particularly beautiful, attracted such attention? Is it the artistic value of the painting itself, or its mysterious history – for example, why did Leonardo decide to keep it? Why was it stolen? …… What is it exactly that makes it a masterpiece?
In this series of lectures we look at ten sculptures and paintings which have changed the course of art history in order to discover why they have attained cult status: works under discussion will include Leonardo’s Mona Lisa; van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Munch’s The Scream. The series will tie in with the much anticipated exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan, at the National Gallery (which runs until Feb 2012) and Tate Modern’s exhibition on Edvard Munch (which opens later in 2012).
We are delighted that the eminent art critic and broadcaster Andrew Graham Dixon will be joining us for a guest lecture this term.
Art History in Focus’s courses are characterised by a relaxed and entertaining learning environment, which often allows for lively discussion. Lectures last two hours with a break for refreshments, and the talks are illustrated by high quality digital images.
