Puzzling Pictures
7 weeks: 18 May - 29 June 2012
Our summer course takes a light-hearted look at a number of unusual themes and techniques in art, and explores some mysterious and puzzling paintings.
Our opening lecture explores the technique of trompe l’oeil, which involves intriguing games of simulation designed to foster the illusion of reality. We look at many extraordinary and often entertaining examples, including variations such as anamorphosis, quadratura, the quod libet and the peepshow.
Another lecture, “Hidden Treasures”, examines details of paintings that are not easily visible to the naked eye, using modern technology such as infrared reflectography and high resolution magnification. Other lecture titles include “Through the Looking Glass – Mirrors and Reflections in Art” and “Beyond Blue Skies: Unidentified Flying Objects In Art”. Come and discover some of the weird and wonderful details flying high in the sky of a number of mysterious paintings, and join me in an examination of some intriguing case studies!
