Glory and Grandeur: The Art and Architecture of Tudor and Stuart England

10 WEEK COURSE: OCTOBER 3RD - DECEMBER 19TH 2014

This series of lectures will explore the way in which art, architecture and sculpture were employed by the Tudor and Stuart monarchs in order to strengthen rule; reinforce the dynastic foundations laid down by their families; and create a cult of magnificence that would rival the most splendid of any European Renaissance court. We examine the role of renowned artists and architects such as Hans Holbein, Nicholas Hilliard, Anthony van Dyck and Inigo Jones and discover to what extent England remained independent of artistic trends on the continent, thus developing her own indigenous language and style.

Our guest lecture explores costume and jewellery, decoding the richly symbolic court dress of the period and demonstrating how court fashion was used to convey important messages about a sitter’s social position and aspirations. How were these costumes worn? What secrets can be unravelled through the closer examination of a pattern, fabric or accessory?

The course is structured thematically, and images are discussed within their economic, political and social context.

Art History in Focus’s courses are characterised by a relaxed and entertaining learning environment, which often allows for lively discussion. Lectures last two hours with a break for refreshments, and the talks are illustrated by high quality digital images. A special guest lecture and study day at the National Portrait Gallery are included.

Lectures are on Friday mornings and run from 11-1; doors open at 10.45.

Please note, the 10th October will be an afternoon session from 2.30-4.30, and there is no class on the 17th October or 14th November.

A Christmas lunch will be arranged on December 12th after class, for those who would like to come.
