Canaletto and the Art of Venice

Friday 29th September 2017

A beautiful exhibition opens this summer at The Queen’s Gallery, London, exploring the irresistible allure of one of Italy’s beautiful cities as immortalised by Canaletto and his contemporaries

Since the British Consul to Venice and Canaletto's most important patron and dealer, Joseph Smith, sold his extensive collection to George III in 1762, the Royal Collection has possessed the world's greatest collection of Canaletto's canvases. These are presented in this ravishing exhibition alongside a spectacular selection of other eighteenth-century Venetian works, including  paintings and drawings by figures such as Francesco Zuccarelli, Rosalba Carriera, Pietro Longhi and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta.

Refreshments (included) and will be served in Keepers' House at the Royal Academy after which we have a private introductory lecture. Following a light lunch in Keepers' House, for those who would like to join the group, we stroll across Green Park to the Queen's Gallery where we have timed entry tickets to the exhibition in the early afternoon. Audioguide hire is also included and lecturers will be available for further discussion and questions in the gallery. The day will finish at about 4.00/4.30.
