Frida Kahlo at the V&A

Wednesday 20th June 2018

Kahlo's paintings offer a stunning visual record of the life of one of the 20th century's most gifted and original artists. Born in Mexico City just three years before the Revolution, her works reflect a deep pride in the rich cultural heritage of her homeland, from its vibrant colours and decorative costumes to its indigenous mythological and religious traditions.

The V&A’s summer exhibition dedicated to Frida Kahlo explores her paintings alongside many of her extraordinary and colourful costumes, for which she was renowned. Frida often rejected contemporary fashion and instead dressed in indigenous Mexican clothing - a statement of post-Revolutionary independence and pride in the roots of her country. The collection of clothing, jewellery, photographs and personal possessions on display was discovered just 14 years ago in the Blue House or Casa Azul (where Frida and her husband Diego Rivera lived) and has never before been seen outside Mexico.

Our study day takes place at the elegant club Ognisko, just a couple of minutes' walk from the V&A museum on Exhibition Road. Siân Walters will give an introductory lecture about Frida Kahlo's life and work and this is followed by a delicious lunch at the club (optional), after which we visit the exhibition. Timed entry tickets are included.

There is a priority booking period for Friends of Art History in Focus until 12th March when general booking lines will open

Programme

Please meet at Ognisko, which is situated on the ground floor of the beautiful building that is the home to the Polish Club on Exhibition Road. You will need to sign in on arrival. Please arrive at any time between 11 and 11.30 - there is a cafe where you may like to order something to drink (refreshments are not included) on arrival.

Our talk by Siân Walters then begins at 11.30.and will take place in the Salonik on the second floor which is accessible by the main staircase or the lift. The second floor is quite high up so we would recommend using the lift. Washroom facilities can be found on the lower ground floor as well as just opposite the Salonik lecture room.

Siân's lecture will put the exhibition in context by tracing Frida's life and work with special reference to her emblematic self-portraits which remain her most striking and memorable body of work.

After lunch at Ognisko (optional, payment can be made on the day) we stroll to the museum to see the exhbition. Timed entry tickets are included.
