Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomist. Drawings in The Royal Collection

Wednesday 20th June 2012

A stunning new exhibition of Leonardo da Vinci’s studies of the human body takes place at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace this summer, and will be the largest ever show dedicated to this area of the artist’s work. Leonardo had wanted to publish a treatise on anatomy and had he done so his discoveries would have transformed European knowledge of the subject, but upon his death his studies remained unknown and unpublished in his studio.
We explore Leonardo’s groundbreaking observations on everything from human proportion and the workings of the heart to embryology, reproduction and optics, and we also examine their dramatic impact and influence on his paintings.

Our study day includes a lecture by Siân Walters, pre-lecture refreshments, timed entry tickets, audioguide hire and study notes. Lunch is not included but has been arranged in a delightful nearby French brasserie, for those who would like to join the group.

Friends of Art History in Focus HAVE ACCESS TO PRIORITY BOOKING UNTIL FEBRUARY 17th (priority booking can be accessed by logging in)

Programme

Please meet at the Royal Astronomical Society at Burlington House where refreshments will be served from 10.30. Visitors should sign in at the entrance hall which is accessible via the main entrance to the R.A.S. Our lecture will then take place in the R.A.S. Lecture Theatre at 11.00.

After lunch (optional) we reconvene and walk across the park (10 minutes) to the Queen's Gallery where we have timed entry tickets to the exhibition in the early afternoon. Lecturing is not permitted in the exhibition but I shall prepare study notes for you to use and audioguide hire is also included – I shall of course be on hand to answer questions and discuss the paintings with you discreetly. The day will finish at about 4.00/4.30.

The fee will be £45.00 per person and includes coffee/tea and biscuits on arrival, an introductory slide lecture, timed entry tickets, audioguide hire and study notes. Your ticket also enables you to return to the exhibition on another occasion if you wish, and details of this will be provided on the day.

Lunch

Please let us know if you would like to join us for lunch in a local French brasserie - there is a reasonably-priced set menu with a choice of dishes, and payment can be made on the day.

Please let us know on the booking form if you have any food intolerances, allergies or dietary requirements as we will need to inform the restaurant of these in advance.
