Guest Lecture: The Mosaics of Ravenna

Monday 8th March 6.00pm

We are delighted to welcome guest lecturer Dr Richard Stemp this evening for a special webinar in which we will learn about the magnificent mosaics of Ravenna, a city which was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire and then Byzantine Italy.

The Byzantine Empire lasted from the fall of Rome in the 5th century until the fall of Constantinople in the 15th, a millennium of unparalleled artistic creativity of which numerous examples survive, but even more has been lost. For a variety of complex of reasons, the best surviving images from this time are not to be found in modern-day Turkey, but in Italy. They are the marvellous mosaics of Ravenna. Created in the 5th and 6th centuries, they are witnesses to three different systems of government, to conflicting beliefs within Christianity, and to the egos and self-glorification of the various rulers and patrons. They are also among the most sumptuous, dazzling and colourful images ever produced.

Dr. Richard Stemp lectures for National Gallery, Tates Modern and Britain and the Wallace Collection and is a well-known and distinguished authority on Italian art. His books include The Secret Language of the Renaissance and a follow-up on Churches and Cathedrals, and he has written and presented two television series for Channel 4.

This is a live-streamed lecture at 6.00pm GMT.  Tune in from anywhere in the world to watch or enjoy a recorded version of the lecture which can be accessed for up to 24 hours afterwards. It will last approximately one hour including Q&A. Please note, the recording is only available to those who have not been able to participate live.
