Painting in Focus: Piero della Francesca's Resurrection

Monday 29th March 6.00pm (BST)

Join us for a live, online Easter lecture as we explore one of the most famous and beloved works of the early Renaissance.

Piero della Francesca's fresco depicting the Resurrection of Christ was made for his home town of Sansepolcro, a place which takes its name from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, explaining the particular choice of subject for this monumental commission. Over 550 years later the painting continues to dominate the Palazzo dei Conservatori (now a museum) and is much loved by all the residents of the town, so much so that a special opening has been created in the wall of the building so that it can be admired by anyone, at any time .

Yet it holds a dramatic story. In its later history when Piero went out of fashion it was whitewashed over, only to appear in a ghost-like fashion from the shadows. Forgotten and abandoned for many years, it was nearly destroyed forever in the Second World War. In more recent times the painting was restored and conserved, a process which unveiled some extraordinary discoveries about the artist and his technique. Your lecturer Siân Walters visited the conservation project and interviewed the restorers in Sansepolcro, and will discuss their findings with you at the end of this live talk.

This is a live-streamed talk at 6.00pm BST*. It will last approximately one hour including Q&A. Tune in from anywhere in the world to participate or enjoy a recorded version if you cannot watch live. For those who are unable to participate live, you will automatically be sent a recording soon after the end of the session enabling you to watch on catch up the following day. Please note, the recording is only available to those who have not been able to participate live, and it is not possible to purchase a recording after booking has closed. Please refer to the Further Information panel below.

Booking closes the day before the lecture.

* please note that the clocks go forward in the UK on the 28th March
