A Private Opening of Raphael at the Palazzo Baldeschi

Wednesday 17th March 10.30am

This live event, broadcast directly from Perugia, is complimentary for Friends of Art History in Focus only - we will send log in details to all Friends a few days in advance and hope that you are able to attend. Don't worry, there is no need to book your space online. A recording of the event will automatically be sent to you if you cannot attend the live event.

2020 commemorated the 500th anniversary of Raphael’s death, which was due to be celebrated in a number of exhibitions worldwide.  Most were cancelled or postponed, but Raphael in Umbria: his Legacy in the Academy opened to acclaim at the Palazzo Baldeschi in Perugia. Now again in lockdown, the museum director has given us special permission to visit the exhibition virtually, for this exclusive event for Friends of Art History in Focus .

Raphael was proud of his heritage, often signing his name “Raphael of Urbino”.  A seminal turning point in his career was the period which he spent in Perugia, where he trained in the workshop of the great Perugino and produced some of his greatest masterpieces. Most of these can now be found in museums all around the world, from the National Gallery (The Ansidei Altarpiece) to the Vatican (The Oddi Altarpiece). The exhibition examines Raphael’s masterpieces in Perugia through a multimedia display but also examines, with the help of significant loans to the exhibition, the importance of those artists who taught and inspired the young painter. We will therefore see works by Pintoricchio, Perugino and Luca Signorelli on our guided tour and also examine the impact of Raphael’s work on generations of later artists at the Perugian Academy. Our tour will also allow us to admire the beautiful rooms of the Palazzo Baldeschi, acquired  in 2002 by the Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia Foundation for exhibitions and cultural initiatives

We are grateful to the museum director Dr Maria Christina De Angelis for allowing us to arrange this private viewing and opening.

This is a live-streamed tour at 10.30AM GMT.  Tune in from anywhere in the world to watch or enjoy a recorded version of the event which can be accessed afterwards. The event is streamed using Zoom and will last approximately one hour - there will be a short historical introduction to Raphael's early career given by art historian Siân Walters followed by a guided tour of the exhbition live-streamed from Perugia, with expert guide Claire Bour.  There will be time for Q and A and you will be able to use your webcam and microphone (if you choose to do so) for discussion.

Art History in Focus is proud to have initiated the concept of online tours in a number of major Italian museums and historic sites in Venice, Assisi, Perugia and Milan. We are delighted to have developed these collaborations which continue to raise important funds for the galleries and cultural sites as well as those working in the cultural sector.
