Cultural Travels from Home: A Walking Tour of Prague

Thursday 6th May, 11.00AM

In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries which are either currently closed or difficult to visit whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location. Our visits will also support galleries and individuals working in the cultural sector whose activities have been affected by the pandemic.

This week we enjoy a live, virtual guided tour of the historic centre of Prague in the company of one of the city's best guides. The tour will focus in particular on the many styles of architecture found in the Old Town, from medieval churches to Cubist town houses and masterpieces by Fischer von Erlach, Alfons Mucha, Josef Gočár and Matyáš Bernard Braun.  We begin at the elegant Art Nouveau Municipal House, now an elegant concert hall and restaurant situated next to the beautiful Gothic Powder Tower.  From here we stroll past the 18th century Estates Theatre, where Mozart conducted the world première of his opera Don Giovanni in 1787 and which also saw the first performance of La Clemenza di Tito, written to celebrate the coronation of Emperor Leopold II. We then spend time in the famous Old Town Square, one of the finest public squares in Europe. It is perhaps most famous for a unique astronomical clock located on the facade of the Town Hall, which is over 600 years old.

We then head along Charles Street admiring the magnificent Baroque facade of the Clam-Gallas palace en route, until we reach the famous Charles Bridge which crosses the River Vltava and links the Old Town with the Little Quarter. We will learn about some of the famous statues and sculpted reliefs on the bridge such as that of St John Nepomuk, patron saint of the Czech Republic.

Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience. You will feel as though you are exploring the city yourself with the running commentary given by our guide.

This is a live event including interactive Q and A starting at 11.00am GMT and will last a little over one hour. Tune in from anywhere in the world to participate or enjoy a recorded version if you cannot watch live. For those who are unable to participate live, you will automatically be sent a recording soon after the end of the session enabling you to watch on catch up later that evening or the following day. Please note, the recording is only available to those who have not been able to participate live.
