Cultural Travels from Home: A Walking Tour of Naples

Thursday 28th October, 10.30AM

INTRODUCTION: In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries which are currently difficult to visit whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location. Our visits will also support galleries and individuals working in the cultural sector whose activities have been affected by the pandemic.

Today we enjoy a live, guided tour of the historic heart of Naples in the company of an expert archaeologist who is also one of the site's most authoritative and enthusiastic guides.

SUMMARY: Join us as we explore some of the most remarkable historic sites and churches of the city, with a particular focus on less well known locations which are off the beaten track. Starting from Piazza Bellini, where we find ourselves situated above an important archaeological site, we stroll through the ancient streets of the "Decumani" (Roman grid road system) and Spaccanapoli street, stopping at the churches of San Domenico Maggiore which contains paintings by Pietro Cavallini, Marco Pini and Giovanni da Nola as well as a fine copy of Caravaggio's Flagellation which once hung here (the original is now in the Museo di Capodimonte).

We will see sculptures by Cosimo Fanzago in the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore, some remains of paintings by the school of Giotto, as well as a famous altarpiece by Perugino in the Duomo where we will also learn about the patron saint of Naples, San Gennaro.

Dr Romano is an archaeologist specialising in the iconic heritage of the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. He holds a degree in Archaeology, an M.A. in Classical Archaeology and a Ph.D. in Archaeological Heritage, with a thesis on Pompeii. Dr Romano has excavated at Pompeii and is part of an international team of archaeologists researching the northern side of Vesuvius. He has also worked as an archaeologist for the Vatican. In 2019 the city of Pompeii awarded him honorary citizenship and in March 2021, during an excavation at Pompeii, he found the remains of an extra-urban villa, an exciting discovery which has received much international coverage. Dr Romano is a highly personable and authoritative guide whose enthusiasm and passion are infectious!

The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to our guide throughout the visit. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience.  You can download the walk itinerary in advance and follow the map as we go by clicking here.
