Cultural Travels from Home: The Doge's Palace and La Serenissima

Thursday 12th May 11.30AM

We are delighted to announce this exclusive online event which will be available to watch live (although regrettably not on catch up, as recording is not permitted in the Doge's Palace).

SUMMARY: In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location.

Today we enjoy a live, extended* online guided tour of the Doge's Palace in Venice in the company of one of the city's best-known guides. We are most grateful to the President and the General Secretary of the Fondazione Musei Civici Venezia for allowing us to broadcast this special livestream tour and all bookings will include a donation / "virtual entrance ticket" which will help support the museum.

*this tour will last one hour 15 minutes

ITINERARY: Venice is famously known as “La Serenissima”. Yet the "most serene" state, whilst focussing her political approach on diplomacy and neutrality, was also keenly aware of her status as a dominant military and naval power.  We will explore the art and architecture of the Doge’s Palace through this narrative, exploring and unravelling the contradictory myth of Venice, where the virtues of political harmony are reflected through her vast reception rooms and canvases alongside the glories, triumphs and spoils of war.  Our tour will take in both the interior and exterior of the building with time taken to admire the magnificent Gothic façade dominating the Piazza San Marco. We will also have the opportunity to see a new exhibition of work by the contemporary artist Anselm Kiefer, a site-specific installation of paintings that responds to one of the most important spaces in the Palazzo Ducale - the monumental Sala dello Scrutinio - and to the history of Venice

The themes covered in this tour will be different from our 2021 itinerary although we will visit some of the same rooms.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION: This is a live event including interactive Q and A starting at 11.30am UK time. Tune in from anywhere in the world to participate. Recording is not permitted in the Doge's Palace so it is only possible to watch this event live, and not on catch up.

The tour lasts approximately 75 minutes and includes interactive Q&A throughout. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience. You will feel as though you are exploring the museum yourself, accompanied by the running commentary given by our knowledgeable guide.

Booking closes two days before the event is streamed. Please refer to the Further Information panel below.
