Cultural Travels from Home: The Monastery of Batalha, Portugal

Monday 1st November 11.00AM

INTRODUCTION: In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries which are currently difficult to visit whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location. Our visits will also support galleries and individuals working in the cultural sector whose activities have been affected by the pandemic.

Today we enjoy a live, guided tour of the beautiful monastery of Batalha in the company of one of Portugal's most authoritative and enthusiastic guides. All bookings will include a donation / "virtual entrance ticket" which will help support the monastery. This will be the first ever virtual tour of this kind in the monastery.

SUMMARY: The Monastery of Our Lady of Victory, also known as Batalha’s Monastery, is a jewel amongst the medieval monuments of Portugal. It was built on the orders of King John I following a religious vow which he had made, and it is here that he was laid to rest with his English wife Philippa of Lancaster. Philippa of Lancaster was the daughter of John of Gaunt and the mother of eight children, amongst whom the famous Henry the Navigator.

We will learn about the evolution of the Gothic style in Portugal as this monastery was a construction site that stayed active for almost 200 years, serving as a learning location for many of the architects and sculptors who would then apply their knowledge to other religious sites throughout the country. Which British visitors came here and made it a famous site throughout Europe? Why was the first architect buried inside the church? What do we mean by the "Manueline" decorative style which made one of its first appearances in this monastery? We will discover the answers to these and many more questions on this morning's live tour.

The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to our guide throughout the visit. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience.

These tours have provided a bright hour to places I'm familiar with and others I have yet to visit. The guides are very knowledgeable, but wear their learning lightly.”
