Cultural Travels from Home: Rembrandt's Amsterdam

Thursday 25th November 11.00AM

INTRODUCTION: In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries which are currently difficult to visit whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location.

Today we go back in time to the Dutch Golden Age and follow in Rembrandt’s footsteps, discovering where he worked and lived and where his paintings used to hang, learning about his life and work along the way.  Our livestream walking tour is led by one of the city's most knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides.

SUMMARY:  In 1631 Rembrandt moved from his home town of Leiden to the busier, wealthier and more cosmopolitan city of Amsterdam which boasted a steady stream of rich patrons and clients who were keen to commission works of art from its talented painters. Rembrandt soon rose to fame and fortune in his newly adopted city, where he would produce some of his most beloved and well-known paintings. Our online live guided walk will start at Rembrandt Square and then head to the Doelen Hotel where The Night Watch was commissioned and the Headquarters of the cloth guild where The Syndics once hung. We’ll see the picturesque Groenburgwal with views of the South Church; the former Dutch East India Company headquarters; the old Weigh House which is depicted in The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp and finally the exterior of Rembrandt's house, now the Rembrandt House Museum.

A truly special way to discover the master of Dutch Painting, “on foot” but from the comfort of your armchair!

The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to our guide throughout the visit. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience. You can download the walk itinerary in advance and follow the map as we go by clicking here.

Please note that this is a walking tour and we will not go inside any art museums or galleries.
