Cultural Travels from Home: The Museo Correr, Venice

Thursday 3rd February 11.00AM

We are delighted to announce this exclusive online event which will be available to watch live (although regrettably not on catch up, as recording is not permitted in the Museo Correr).

INTRODUCTION: In our series of online webinars, we visit artists, art historians and guides in cultural cities around the world and enjoy an hour’s guided tour, museum visit or demonstration. The visits are live and interactive, allowing you to ask questions. These webinars will enable you to gain special access to sites, studios and galleries whilst at the same time providing a wonderful opportunity to travel virtually from home, no matter your location. Our visits will also support galleries and individuals working in the cultural sector whose activities have been affected by the pandemic

Today we enjoy a live, guided tour of the world-famous Museo Correr in the company of Dr Luisella Romeo, one of the city's most authoritative and popular guides. All bookings will include a donation / "virtual entrance ticket" which will help support the museum.

SUMMARY: Located in the magnificent Piazza San Marco, the Museo Correr is one of the most important museums in Venice which traces the entire history of the city through painting, costume, sculpture, the decorative arts, weapons, everyday objects and much more. It is named after Teodoro Correr (1750-1830), an enthusiastic art collector who donated his extensive private art collection to the city as well as the funds to maintain and extend it. As the collection grew over the years, it found a new home in the so-called the Napoleonic Wing and part of the Procuratie Nuove in the piazza.

Our guided tour will start in the impressive Neoclassical Rooms with the Canova Collection of sculpture and then the Morosini Rooms which are dedicated to the life of the famous doge and admiral Francesco Morosini (1619-1694). We will take some time to admire the intricately carved wood blocks used to make the famous woodcut map of Venice designed by Jacopo de’ Barbari in 1500 and then spend time in the rooms dedicated to Venetian arts and crafts and everyday life. Please note that currently the picture gallery and the upper floor are not currently accessible to visitors. We end by descending the great staircase into the Piazza San Marco, for a panoramic view of the square.

The tour is interactive, so you will be able to put questions to our guide throughout the visit. Our events use the most up-to-date technology to provide you with the best possible virtual experience.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION: This is a live event including interactive Q and A starting at 11.00am UK time, lasting one hour. Recording is not permitted in the museum so it is only possible to watch this event live, and not on catch up.

Booking closes the day before the event is streamed.

Art History in Focus is proud to have initiated the concept of online tours in a number of major Italian museums and historic sites including the Castello Sforzesco and Palazzo Bagatti Valsecchi in Milan, The Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, the Ca’ Rezzonico and the Basilica of San Marco in Venice and the Palazzo Medici in Florence. We are delighted to have developed these collaborations which continue to raise important funds for the galleries and cultural sites.
