Cultural Travels from Home: Amsterdam by Boat
Monday 31st October 11.00AM
All aboard for a unique tour as we enjoy a canal tour of Amsterdam led by our expert guides, broadcast live from their private boat!
We will learn how and why the canals were developed, how they were significant within Europe at the time, why they are so narrow and what they were used for in the past. We will also find out what they are used for today, from tourism and commercial transport to fishing, and yes, even swimming! Our cruise will pass along the Singel canal where we see its narrowest house followed by Rembrandt's lawyers' residence and then the home of Captain Frans Banning Cocq, the main character in Rembrandt's Night Watch. From there, we will head along the beautiful Brewer's canal and head towards the Prinsengracht, which is full of beautiful house boats. We then enter the quaint Jordaan district, which used to be a polluted neighbourhood but is now one of the most sought after residential quarters. All in all this should be a beautiful, informative and very relaxing way to enjoy the city, from your armchair at home!
