In Fine Style: The Art of Tudor and Stuart Fashion

Friday 28th June 2013

A stunning new exhibition dedicated to costume and portraiture at the Tudor and Stuart courts will take place at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace this summer, displaying over 60 paintings by renowned artists such Nicholas Hilliard, Anthony van Dyck and Hans Holbein as well as sumptuous examples of jewellery, garments, accessories and armour. Expert costume historian and author Jacqui Ansell will decode the richly symbolic court dress of the period and show us how court fashion was used to convey important messages about a sitter’s wealth, social position and aspirations. How were these costumes worn? How much did they cost? What secrets can be unravelled through the closer examination of a pattern, fabric or accessory?

Jacqui will be familiar to many Art History in Focus regulars – her lectures are always great fun and highly informative, and I am delighted that she is able to join us

Our study day includes two introductory lectures by Siân Walters and Jacqui Ansell, refreshments served in the elegant surroundings of the R.A.S., timed entry tickets and audioguide hire. Lunch is not included but has been arranged in a delightful local restaurant, for those who would like to join the group.

Itinerary

Please meet at the Royal Astronomical Society at Burlington House and make your way to the Lecture Theatre for our first lecture which will begin at 10.00. Visitors should sign in at the entrance hall, accessible via the main entrance to the R.A.S, at any time from 9.30.

Our first introductory lecture by Siân Walters will run from 10.00 – 10.45, followed by refreshments in the Library (accessible by lift or stairs). Dress historian and author Jacqui Ansell will then give a lecture on fashion and style at the Tudor and Stuart courts.

After a light lunch lunch (optional) we reconvene and walk across the park (15 minutes) to the Queen’s Gallery where we have timed entry tickets to the exhibition in the early afternoon. Lecturing is not permitted in the exhibition but audioguide hire is also included and I will be available for further discussion and questions in the gallery. The day will finish at about 4.00/4.30.

The fee will be £48.00 per person and includes two lectures, coffee/tea and biscuits, timed entry tickets and audioguide hire. Your ticket also enables you to return to the exhibition on another occasion if you wish, and details of this will be provided on the day.

Please note: if you have a year’s pass at the Queen’s Gallery, the study day price will be reduced by £6.50. We will refund this money to you by cheque if you pay online, or if you are paying by cheque please simply deduct £6.50 per person from the total. Please however inform us on booking if you have an annual pass for the Queen’s Gallery, and please do make a note to bring this on the day along with ID displaying your photograph and signature, otherwise entrance will not be permitted. I am afraid that we are unable to offer discounts if we are informed that you have a pass after the booking has been made.
