Longford Castle

Tuesday 3 July 2018

A unique opportunity to visit one of Britain’s most important art collections and private homes, rarely open to the public.

Longford Castle in Wiltshire has been home to the Earls of Radnor since the 18th century, although it was originally built as an Elizabethan prodigy house then redesigned on a number of occasions under architects such as James Wyatt. The family’s exceptional art collection was amassed by successive generations of the family and is considered one of the finest in the United Kingdom.

The castle is only open to the public on a few pre-booked days per year and we are delighted to have confirmed an early reservation. Private group tours of Longford are, understandably, extremely popular and can sell out very quickly so we would recommend booking early for this study day. As always, friends and family are welcome.

You will be picked up at 8.30am from Cobham in Surrey and we then drive by executive coach to Longford Castle (journey time approx 1 hour 40 minutes). Siân will give some introductory explanations en route and on arrival we enjoy a private guided tour lasting approximately 1½ to 2 hours, with an opportunity to have a short stroll in the garden afterwards. The art collection includes many notable paintings by van Dyck, Claude, David Teniers and Frans Hals, Avercamp, Massys, Reynolds and Gainsborough, and there are also fine collections of furniture and porcelain. The Castle has important associations with the National Gallery and a number of its works can be seen on long-term loan in London, including Holbein’s Portrait of Erasmus and Sebastiano del Piombo’s Portrait of a Lady. Furthermore, some of the gallery’s most important works were acquired from the collection, including Holbein’s Ambassadors.

Our exclusive private tour will be led by one of Longford’s expert guides and small souvenir booklet written by Dr. Nicholas Penny is also included.

We then drive to a nearby village where a 2-course lunch with wine (included) is served in a delightful English country thatched inn.

After lunch we travel to nearby Salisbury where there is time to explore at leisure. You may like to visit Arundells, the home of the late Sir Edward Heath, which has a beautiful medieval garden and a fine art collection including works by John Singer Sargent, Nash and Lowry. Alternatively spend time admiring the beautiful architecture and stained glass of Salisbury Cathedral, home of the best preserved copy of the Magna Carta, or visit National Trust’s Mompesson House, an elegant Queen Anne townhouse belonging to the National Trust. All three are situated within the Cathedral Close and so there will be very little walking involved. Please see below for entrance charges (Salisbury Cathedral has free entry and Mompesson House is free for National Trust members).

A guided tour of Salisbury Cathedral is included for those who would like to join the group.

Our coach will pick us up nearby and we will return to Cobham by 6.45.

Please inform us when booking of any food intolerances, allergies or special dietary requirements so that these can be catered for. Thank you
