Painting Georgia O'Keeffe Country

Monday 25th February 2019

Enjoy a specially-arranged guided tour with landscape artist Lydia Bauman of her new exhibition "Looking for Georgia" at the Mall Galleries. Lydia is both a landscape painter and an art historian fascinated by the phenomenon of the American artist, Georgia O'Keeffe and her idiosyncratic interpretations of the landscape of New Mexico. She works in a mixed media technique which involves combining pigments with plaster, resin, wax and other materials to create textured surfaces evocative of the look and feel of the landscapes that inspired her. For this exhibition she travelled to 'Georgia O’Keeffe Country' - Northern New Mexico desert which O’Keeffe referred to as her 'backyard', to re-interpret the landscapes made familiar to us by the Mother of American modernism’s own iconic works.

Photographer, anthropologist and environmentalist, Karl Dudman (who is also Lydia's son) travelled to New Mexico with the artist to record all stages of the Looking for Georgia project. A selection of his photographs will be on display in the exhibition and he will also be joining us for this special introductory tour.

Lydia’s work is much sought after and examples of her paintings have been acquired by Saatchi and Saatchi, Gordon Ramsey, United Airlines, Warner Bros, The Dorchester Hotel, Trevor Nunn and Deutsche Bank to name just a few.
